ADJUSTMENT

1,586cc and 1,796cc Engines

1. Remove the water pump.
2. Remove the tensioner cover.
3. Fully compress the snubber spring. Insert a screwdriver into the tensioner release mechanism.
4. Without removing the screwdriver, insert the tensioner and align the bolt holes. Install the torque and bolts.
5. Adjust the chain tension as follows:
   1. Remove the two blind plugs and aluminum washers from the front cover.
   2. Loosen the guide strip attaching screws.
   3. Press the top of the chain guide strip through the adjusting hole in the cylinder head.
   4. Tighten the guide strip attaching screws.
   5. Remove the screwdriver from the tensioner and let the snubber take up the slack in the chain.
   6. Install the blind plugs and aluminum washers.
   7. Install the tensioner cover and gasket.
   8. Install a new gasket and water pump. Install the crankshaft pulley and drive belt and adjust the tension. Check the cooling system level.
