Front Cover Oil Seal

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

Except Diesel and 1,998cc Engines

The front cover oil seal can be removed and a new one installed without removing the front cover.

1. Scribe alignment marks on the hood hinges and remove the hood.
2. Drain the cooling system.

   CAUTION
   When draining engine coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted to ethylene glycol antifreeze and could drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantity. Always drain coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or is several years old.

3. Disconnect the upper and lower radiator hoses and remove the radiator.
4. Remove the drive belt(s).
5. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
6. Pry the front oil seal from the front cover.
7. Clean the pulley and seal area. To install:
8. Press a new front seal into position (flush).
9. Install the crankshaft pulley and torque the bolt to specifications.
10. Install the drive belt(s) and adjust the tension.
11. Install the radiator and connect the upper and lower hoses. Fill the cooling system.
12. Start the engine and check for leaks.
13. Install the hood.

2,209cc Diesel Engine

1. Disconnect the battery ground.
2. Drain the cooling system.

   CAUTION

3. Remove the fan and fan shroud.
4. Remove all drive belts from the engine.
5. Remove the power steering pump and its bracket, and position it out of the way, without disconnecting the hoses.
6. Remove the water pump.
7. Remove the crankshaft pulley bolt and, using a puller, remove the pulley.

   Unbolt and remove the timing gear cover. Discard the gasket.

8. Drive out the old seal.
9. Coat the outer circumference of the new seal with sealer, and the sealing surface with clean engine oil. To install:
10. Coat the outer circumference of the new seal with sealer, and the sealing surface with clean engine oil.
11. Drive in the new seal.
12. Install the timing gear cover. Torque the bolts to 12–17 ft. lbs.
13. Install the pulley. Torque the crankshaft pulley bolt to 150–180 ft. lbs.
14. Install the water pump.
15. Install the power steering pump.
16. Install the accessory drive belts.
17. Install the fan and fan shroud.
18. Fill the cooling system.
19. Connect the battery ground.
