REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

  1. Drain the engine coolant into a large, clean container for reuse.

    CAUTION
When draining engine coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted to ethylene glycol antifreeze and could drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantity. Always drain coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or is several years old.

  2. Remove the nuts which secure the thermostat housing to the water pump.
  3. Lift the thermostat out.
  4. Thermostat installation is performed in the reverse order of removal.

    WARNING
The thermostat is equipped with a plunger which covers and uncovers a bypass hole at its bottom. Because of its unusual construction, only the specified Mazda thermostat or an aftermarket thermostat equipped with this feature should be used for replacement. Use of a standard thermostat will cause the engine to overheat.
