Thermal Reactor

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

Fig. 1: View of the thermal reactor

CAUTION
The thermal reactor operates at extremely high temperatures. Allow the engine to cool completely before attempting its removal.

To remove the thermal reactor, which replaces the exhaust manifold, proceed in the following manner:

  1. Remove the air cleaner assembly from the carburetor.
  2. Unbolt and remove the air injection pump, as outlined in Emission Controls.
  3. Remove the intake manifold assembly, complete with carburetor.
  4. Remove the heat stove from the thermal reactor.
  5. Unfasten the thermal reactor securing nuts.

NOTE: The bottom nut is difficult to reach. Mazda makes a special wrench, part number 49 2133 001, to remove it. If the wrench is unavailable, a flexible drive metric socket wrench can be substituted.

  6. Lift the thermal reactor away from the engine.
  7. Installation is the reverse of removal. Torque the nuts to 40 ft. lbs.
