NOTE: A static timing gauge adapter and metric dial indicator
are necessary for this procedure.
- Disconnect the battery ground cables.
- Remove the distributor head plug bolt from the injection pump.
- Install the timing gauge adapter and metric dial indicator so that the indicator
pointer is in contact with the injection pump plunger and the gauge reads
2.0mm (0.0787 in.).
- Align the 2°ATDC mark on the crankshaft pulley with the indicator on
the timing gear case cover.
- Slowly turn the engine counterclockwise until the dial indicator pointer
stops moving (approximately 30–50°pulley travel).
- Adjust the dial indicator to 0. Confirm that the dial indicator does not
move from 0, by rotating the crankshaft slightly from right to left.
- Turn the crankshaft clockwise until the timing mark is once again aligned
with the cover pointer. The dial indicator should read 1mm0.02mm (0.0394 in.0.00079
in.). If not, proceed to Step 8.
- Loosen the injection pump mounting nuts and bolts.
- Rotate the pump counterclockwise past the correct timing position, then
clockwise until timing is correct.
- Repeat the timing check to make sure the adjustment is correct.
