Transmission Applications

The 4-speed manual transmission, used from 1972 through 1984, is synchronized in all forward gears. The transmission case is of light metal construction, manufactured as two mated halves. There is no external shift linkage; all the shifting mechanisms are contained within the case. There are no linkage or shifter adjustments.

An optional 5-speed manual, first available in 1976 and used through 1984, has the same ratio in the first four gears as the 4-speed, but has an overdrive 5th gear with a 0.875:1 ratio. It is synchronized in all forward gears. The transmission case is cast aluminum, with a bottom cover and removable clutch and extension housings. The gearshift lever is connected directly to the shift forks; thus, there is no external linkage, and no adjustments are necessary.

In 1986 a completely different unit was introduced. This transmission is a 4-speed unit which, in its optional form, is converted to a 5-speed overdrive gearbox with the addition of an intermediate housing containing the overdrive gearing.
