Lower Control Arm

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

1972–84 Vehicles
  1. Raise the front end and support it on jackstands under the frame.
  2. Remove the wheels.
  3. Remove the lower shock absorber bolts and push the shock up, out of the way.
  4. Disconnect the front stabilizer bar from the control arms.
  5. Place a floor jack under the lower arm and raise the arm to compress the spring. Install a safety chain or spring compressor.
  6. Unbolt the ball joint from the lower arm.
  7. Pull the spindle and ball joint away from the arm.
  8. Carefully lower the jack. The spring is under pressure, so be very careful that it is secured with the chain or spring compressor.
  9. Remove the three lower control arm retaining bolts and lift the arm from the frame.
  10. When installing the arm, safety chain the spring to the arm prior to installing the arm, or use a spring compressor. When the arm is in position, loosely install the ball joint bolts and remove the chain or compressor, then, tighten the ball joint nut to 70 ft. lbs.; the three ball joint retaining nuts to 70 ft. lbs. Install all other parts in reverse order of removal.
  11. Have the front end alignment checked.
