Wormshaft Preload

  1. With the steering gear mounted in a vise, and the Pitman are positioned in a ``wheels straight ahead'' position, attach a spring scale and adapter 49 0180 510B to the wormshaft.
  2. Check the rotating torque of the wormshaft. Rotating torque should be 2.2 lbs. or less and at least 12 to 1 lb. higher than what the rotating torque is at a point 360°from straight ahead.
  3. If preload is not correct, hold the adjusting screw on top of the gear with a screwdriver and loosen the locknut. Turn the adjusting screw to obtain the correct preload.
  4. When preload is correct, hold the adjusting screw and tighten the locknut to 35 ft. lbs. Make sure that the adjusting screw does not move while the locknut is being tightened.
