  2. Loosen the bolt securing the wormshaft to the steering shaft joint.
  3. Remove the cotter pin and nut securing the Pitman arm to the center link and separate the Pitman arm from the link with a ball joint tool.
  4. Remove the speedometer cable from the clips securing it to the steering gear housing and power brake booster.
  5. Unbolt the steering gear from the frame.
  6. If the Pitman arm is to be removed from the sector shaft, first matchmark their positions, relative to each other.
  7. Installation is the reverse of removal. Observe the following torques:
Rotary Pick-Up
  1. Raise and support the front end on jackstands. Remove the left front wheel.
  2. Loosen the bolt securing the wormshaft to the steering shaft joint.
  3. Remove the cotter pin and nut securing the Pitman arm to the center link and separate the Pitman arm from the link with a ball joint tool.
  4. Unbolt and remove the insulator from the Pitman arm.
  5. Unbolt the steering gear from the frame.
  6. If the Pitman arm is to be removed from the sector shaft, first matchmark their positions, relative to each other.
  7. Installation is the reverse of removal. Observe the following torques:
B1800 and 1979–81 B2000
  1. Remove the steering wheel as outlined above.
  2. Remove the light switch knob.
  3. Remove the steering column covers.
  4. Remove the stop ring, cancelling cam and spring from the end of the column.
  5. Disconnect the combination switch wiring.
  6. Remove the combination switch from the column.
  7. Remove the steering column support bracket.
  8. Loosen the nut securing the bottom of the steering column jacket and pull the jacket off of the shaft.
  9. Remove the dust cover from the firewall at the bottom of the shaft.
  10. Raise and support the front end on jackstands.
  11. Remove the left front wheel. Remove the air cleaner.
  12. Disconnect the fluid pipe at the clutch master cylinder, and cap the openings.
  13. Disconnect the fluid pipes at the brake master cylinder, and cap the openings.
  14. Remove the brake master cylinder.
  15. Disconnect the pushrod at the pedal.
  16. Unbolt and remove the power booster from the firewall.
  17. Drain the cooling system.

    CAUTION
When draining the coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted by the ethelyne glycol antifreeze, and are quite likely to drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantity. Always drain the coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or several years old.

  18. Disconnect the EGR pipe.
  19. Remove the accelerator linkage.
  20. Disconnect the choke cable and fuel line. Plug the fuel line.
  21. Disconnect the PCV valve hose.
  22. Disconnect the heater return hose and by-pass hose.
  23. Remove the intake manifold-to-cylinder head attaching nuts.
  24. Remove the manifold and carburetor as an assembly.
  25. Clean the gasket mating surfaces.
  26. Using a floor jack, raise the lower control arm until the upper control arm is off the bumper stop.
  27. Place a chain through the coil spring as a safety measure, or install a spring compressor.
  28. Remove the cotter pin and nut retaining the upper ball joint.
  29. Using a ball joint separator, disconnect the ball joint from the spindle.
  30. Working under the hood, remove the two upper arm retaining bolts and lift the arm from the truck. Note the number and position of any shims.
  31. Disconnect the center link from the Pitman arm.
  32. Unbolt the steering gear from the frame. Lift the gear off of the frame, noting the position of the shim for installation.
  33. Installation of the steering gear and control arm is the reverse of removal. Mount the steering gear, placing the shim in its original position. Place the upper control arm shaft shims in their original locations. When installing the brake booster, check the clearance between the master cylinder piston and the power booster pushrod. Clearance should be 0.10–0.50mm (0.0039–0.0197 in.). If not, adjust it at the pushrod. Observe the following torques:
  34. Install a new gasket and the manifold on the studs. Torque the attaching nuts to specification, working from the center outward.
  35. Connect the PCV valve hose to the manifold.
