Steering Column
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
1972–84 Vehicles
Disconnect the battery ground.
Remove the steering wheel.
Remove the column cover.
Remove the combination switch.
Remove the column bracket-to-instrument panel bolts.
Remove the carpet and insulator.
Remove the floor panel opening cover bolts and pull the jacket off the steering shaft.
Remove the bolt at the steering shaft-to-wormshaft coupling and pull the column up and out of the truck.
Installation is the reverse of removal. Observe the following torques:
Coupling bolt: 20 ft. lbs.
Column bracket: 19 ft. lbs.
Steering wheel nut: 29 ft. lbs.
1986 Vehicles

Disconnect the battery ground.
Remove the steering wheel.
Remove the column cover.
Remove the combination switch.
Remove the column bracket-to-instrument panel bolts.
Remove the carpet and insulator.
Remove the floor panel opening cover bolts and pull the jacket off the steering shaft.
Remove the bolt at the steering shaft-to-intermediate shaft coupling bolt and pull the column up and out of the truck.
Installation is the reverse of removal. Observe the following torque:
Coupling bolt: 18 ft. lbs.
Column bracket: 16 ft. lbs.
Steering wheel nut: 36 ft. lbs.
