LEVEL CHECK

1990–93 Vehicles Except MX-3 with G5M-R Transaxle, 323 4WD and 1993 626/MX-6/Probe
  1. Park the car on a level surface. Apply the parking brake.
  2. If equipped with a digital instrument cluster, disconnect the harness from the speed sensor assembly located on the transaxle housing.

Fig. 1: Remove the speedometer cable or speed sensor harness plug from the driven gear assembly, as well as the retaining bolt (arrow)

Fig. 2: Pull the speedometer driven gear assembly from the transaxle and, using the gear as a dipstick, read the fluid level

  3. If equipped with an analog instrument cluster, disconnect the speedometer cable from the speedometer driven gear assembly located on the transaxle housing.
  4. Remove the retaining bolt and pry out the speedometer driven gear assembly or the vehicle speed sensor from the transaxle housing.
  5. Check the fluid level on the speedometer driven gear assembly or the vehicle speed sensor assembly. The level should be at the full mark, just above the gear teeth.
  6. If the level is low, place a funnel in the driven gear or sensor opening in the transaxle and pour in the necessary amount of fluid. Recheck the fluid level.
  7. Install the speedometer driven gear or speed sensor and connect the cable or harness.

  2. Remove the oil level plug and washer.

Fig. 3: To check the fluid level, remove the inspection/fill plug from the side of the case. If the level is below the plug, add oil until full

  3. Using a cotton swab or similar item, verify that the oil is near the bottom of the plug port.
  4. If the oil level is low, add oil through the oil level plug hole.
  5. Install a new washer to the oil level plug and tighten the plug to 29–43 ft. lbs. (40–58 Nm).
