level check

  1. Park the car on a level surface and apply the parking brake. Run the engine to warm up the transaxle fluid.
  2. Shift the transaxle through all ranges and return the lever to the P position.
  3. With the engine still idling, remove the dipstick and wipe it clean, then insert it firmly. Be certain that it has been pushed fully home. Remove the dipstick and check the fluid level while holding the dipstick horizontally. The level should be at or near the high mark. The dipstick has a high and low mark on both sides, which are accurate for level indications when the fluid is hot (normal operating temperature), or at other than normal operating temperature.

Fig. 1: To check the ATX fluid level, first remove the dipstick, wipe it clean then reinsert it and remove it again

Fig. 2: Read the fluid level on the dipstick. Ensure that it reads Full (hot or cold), if not . . .

Fig. 3: . . . place a funnel into the dipstick tube and add enough of the proper grade of oil to achieve a Full reading on the dipstick

  4. If the fluid level is below the low mark, place a funnel on the dipstick tube and add Dexron® II or M-III® type automatic transmission fluid, one half pint (0.23L) at a time. Check the level often between additions, being careful not to overfill the transmission.
