REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

External Coil except 1990–92 626 and MX-6
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Disconnect the distributor lead wire from the coil.
  3. Disconnect the electrical connector from the coil.
  4. Remove the coil attaching bolts and remove the coil.
  5. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
1990–92 626 and MX6
NORMALLY ASPIRATED ENGINE
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Disconnect the high tension lead from the coil by first twisting, then pulling it from the coil terminal.
  3. Disconnect the distributor wiring harness from the coil. Tag the wires so they can be reinstalled in their original positions.
  4. Remove the 2 mounting nuts and remove the coil and bracket assembly.
  5. Loosen the clamp screw at the coil bracket and remove the coil.
  6. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
TURBOCHARGED ENGINE
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Disconnect the high tension lead from the coil by first twisting, then pulling it from the coil terminal.
  3. Disconnect the igniter wiring harness and remove the 2 nuts.
  4. Lift the coil and igniter assembly and disconnect the coil and noise suppressor wiring harness. Tag the wires so they can be reinstalled in their original positions.
  5. Slide the protective cover back and disconnect the coil wiring harness. Tag the wires so they can be reinstalled in their original positions.
  6. Remove the noise suppressor. Remove the 2 screws and the ignitor module.
  7. Remove the ignitor module mounting bracket and the coil.
  8. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
Integral with Distributor Coil

The ignition coil is integrated within the distributor assembly and cannot be replaced. If the coil malfunctions, the distributor must be replaced.
