Starter

TESTING

  1. Ensure that the battery is fully charged.
  2. Inspect the starter wire connections at the starter for looseness or corrosion.
  3. Follow the positive battery cable to the starter and ensure that battery voltage is reaching the starter.
  4. If battery voltage is found at the starter, continue with the test. If not, inspect or replace the battery cable.

Fig. 1: Connect a voltmeter to the starter terminals and ground to check for battery voltage at the starter

  5. If equipped with a manual transaxle, depress the clutch pedal.
  6. Turn the ignition to START position and check for battery voltage at the S terminal of the starter.
  7. If battery voltage is found at the S terminal, remove the starter and inspect the starter relay, field coil and armature. Replace as necessary.
  8. If no battery voltage is found at the S terminal, inspect the ignition switch, wire harness and, if equipped, clutch pedal interlock switch (MTX) or transmission range sensor/neutral safety switch (ATX).
