TESTING

  1. Vereify that the battery if fully charged.
  2. Ensure that the alternator drive belt is in good condition, and proper belt tension is maintained.
  3. Turn off all electrical loads. Ensure that the cooling fan does not run.
  4. Turn the ignition switch to ON and verify that the alternator warning light is on. If not, inspect the bulb and the wire harness between the alternator and the bulb.
  5. Turn the ignition switch to START and verify that the alternator turns smoothly, without any noise while the engine is running.

    CAUTION
While the engine is running, keep yourself, loose clothing, long hair and any test equipment out of the path of rotating components. Severe injury or even death can occur.

  6. Measure the voltage at the B + terminal of the alternator. The voltage should read 13.0–15.0 volts with the engine idling.
  7. If the reading is not correct, check the charging system wiring harness. If the harness is OK, replace the alternator.
