Rear Main Seal

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  3. Remove the transaxle/transmission assembly. Refer to Section 7.
  4. If equipped with a manual transaxle/transmission, remove the clutch and flywheel assembly. Refer to Section 7.
  5. If equipped with an automatic transaxle/transmission, remove the flexplate-to-crankshaft bolts, the flexplate and shim plates.
  6. Cut the oil seal lip with a knife. Install a rag to the housing and using a screwdriver, carefully pry the oil seal from the oil seal housing. Clean the gasket mounting surfaces.

    To install:

  7. Clean the oil seal housing. Coat the oil seal and the housing with clean engine oil.
  8. Press the oil seal into the housing and tap it evenly into place with a hammer and a large diameter piece of pipe. The seal must be flush with the edge of the rear cover.
  9. Install the clutch and flywheel assembly or the flexplate, as applicable.
  10. Install the transaxle/transmission, lower the vehicle and connect the negative battery cable.
