Clearing Codes

1994–95 626 with ATX transmission, 1995 Protege and Millenia and 1996–98 Models

1. Ensure that the ignition switch is in the OFF position.
2. Attach an OBD II compliant scan tool to the data link connector-2, located beneath the drivers side of the dash panel, as instructed by the tool manufacturers directions.
3. Follow the manufacturers instructions for initializing the scan tool and select the Clear Codes function.
4. After clearing the code, perform the code retrieval procedure again to ensure there are no remaining or newly set codes present.

Except 1994–95 626 with ATX transmission, 1995 Protege and Millenia and 1996–98 Models

Codes stored within the ECM memory must be erased when repairs are completed. Also, erasing codes during diagnosis can separate hard faults from intermittents. To erase stored codes:

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Depress the brake pedal for at least 5 seconds.

   NOTE: Not all Mazdas covered by this book require that the brake pedal be depressed to reset a code, however, as a precaution, we've added it as a necessary step for all models. If your model does not require it, this action will be ignored by the ECU.

3. Wait an additional 10 seconds, then reconnect the battery cable.
4. After clearing the code, perform the code retrieval procedure again to ensure there are no remaining or newly set codes present.
