REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

Miata and Protégé

1. Remove or disconnect the following:
   • Negative battery cable
   • Air cleaner
   • Catalytic converter pipe from the front pipe
   • Intake manifold support bracket bolts
   • Starter electrical connectors
   • Starter

   To install:

2. Install or connect the following:
   • Starter and loosely tighten the lower starter mounting bolt
   • Starter electrical connectors
   • Intake manifold support bracket. Tighten the bolts to 28–38 ft. lbs. (38–51 Nm).
   • Upper starter bolts. Tighten all starter bolts to 24–33 ft. lbs. (32–46 Nm). The upper mounting bolts must be tightened first.
   • Catalytic converter pipe to the front pipe. Tighten the bolts to 28–38 ft. lbs. (38–51 Nm).
   • Air cleaner
   • Negative battery cable

626 and MX-6

4 CYLINDER

1. Remove or disconnect the following:
   • Negative battery cable
   • Fresh air duct and resonance chamber
   • Air cleaner assembly electrical connectors
   • Air cleaner assembly
   • Intake manifold bracket
   • Wiring at the starter
   • Starter

   To install:

2. Install or connect the following:
   • Starter. Tighten the bolts to 33 ft. lbs. (46 Nm).
   • Wiring at the starter
   • Intake manifold bracket. Tighten the bolts to 38 ft. lbs. (51 Nm).
   • Air cleaner assembly
   • Air cleaner assembly electrical connectors
   • Fresh air duct and resonance chamber
   • Negative battery cable

6 CYLINDER

1. Remove or disconnect the following:
   • Negative battery cable
   • Fresh air duct
   • Air cleaner assembly electrical connector
   • Air cleaner assembly
2. If equipped with automatic transaxle, proceed as follows:
   1. Relieve the fuel system pressure. Drain the cooling system.
   2. Disconnect the accelerator cable from the throttle body. Label and disconnect the electrical connectors, vacuum hoses and coolant hoses from the throttle body.
   3. Remove the throttle body.
   4. Disconnect and plug the fuel supply and return lines.
   5. Disconnect the transaxle selector cable from the transaxle and remove the cable bracket.
   6. Remove the starter bracket.
3. Remove or disconnect the following:
   • Wiring at the starter
   • Starter mounting bolts
   • Starter

   To install:

4. Install or connect the following:
   • Starter
   • Starter mounting bolts
5. Tighten the starter mounting bolts to 38 ft. lbs. (51 Nm).
6. Connect the wiring at the starter.
7. If equipped with automatic transaxle, proceed as follows:
   1. Install the starter bracket.
   2. Install the cable bracket and connect the transaxle selector cable to the transaxle.
   3. Connect and fuel supply and return lines.
   4. Install the throttle body.
   5. Connect the accelerator cable to the throttle body. Attach the electrical connectors, vacuum hoses and coolant hoses to the throttle body.
   6. Refill the cooling system.
8. Install or connect the following:
   • Air cleaner assembly
   • Air cleaner assembly electrical connector
   • Fresh air duct
   • Negative battery cable

Millenia S Models

1. Remove or disconnect the following:
   • Negative battery cable
   • Charge air cooler duct
   • Battery clamp, box and battery
   • Battery tray
   • Rear charge air cooler
   • Pipe bracket
   • Starter electrical connectors
   • Starter

   To install:

2. Install or connect the following:
   • Starter. Tighten the bolts to 24–33 ft. lbs. (32–46 Nm).
   • B-terminal wire. Tighten the nut to 12–16 ft. lbs. (16–22 Nm).
   • S-terminal wire
   • Pipe bracket. Tighten the bolt to 14–18 ft. lbs. (19–25 Nm).
   • Rear charge air cooler using new O-rings. Tighten the nuts to 14–18 ft. lbs. (19–25 Nm).
   • Battery tray
   • Battery, box and clamp
   • Charge air cooler duct
   • Negative battery cable

Millenia

1. Remove or disconnect the following:
   • Negative battery cable
   • Battery clamp, box and battery
   • Battery tray
   • Shift cable from the selector lever
   • Cable from the bracket by squeeze the lock tabs
   • Electrical connectors from the starter solenoid
   • 2 selector cable bracket bolts and the bracket
   • 2 nuts and the bolt from the starter bracket and the bracket
   • Starter electrical connectors
   • Starter

   To install:

2. Install or connect the following:
   • Starter. Tighten the bolts to 24–33 ft. lbs. (32–46 Nm).
   • B-terminal wire. Tighten the nut to 12–16 ft. lbs. (16–22 Nm).
   • S-terminal wire to the solenoid
   • Starter bracket
   • Selector cable bracket. Tighten the bolts to 5–7 ft. lbs. (7–9 Nm).
   • Starter solenoid electrical connectors
   • Shift cable into the cable bracket and into the selector lever
   • Battery tray
   • Battery, box and clamp
   • Negative battery cable
