Disc Brake Pads

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

Protege
FRONT
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2. Remove some of the brake fluid from the master cylinder reservoir. The reservoir should be no more than 12 full.
  3. Remove the wheels.
  4. Remove the pad pins and retaining springs from the brake pads.
  5. Remove the brake pads.
  6. Push the caliper piston into the caliper bore.

    To install:

  7. Install the brake pads and shims to the caliper.
  8. Insert the pad pins and retaining springs.
  9. Install the wheels.
  10. Test the brakes for proper operation.
REAR
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2. Remove some of the brake fluid from the master cylinder reservoir.
  3. Loosen the parking brake cable adjustment from inside the vehicle.
  4. Remove the wheels.
  5. Disconnect the parking brake cable from the cable bracket and the operating lever. Remove the screw plug. Turn the manual adjustment gear counterclockwise with an Allen wrench to pull the brake caliper piston inward (turn until it stops).
  6. Remove the upper caliper mounting bolt and pivot the caliper upward off of the pads.
  7. Remove the brake pads and spring clips from the caliper support.

    To install:

  8. Install the brake pads, shims and spring clips to the caliper support. Pivot the caliper over the brake pads.
  9. Install the bottom caliper mounting bolt. Tighten the bolt to 33–44 ft. lbs. (46–60 Nm). Attach the parking brake cable to the operating lever and tighten the screw plug to 10 ft. lbs. (14 Nm).
  10. Adjust the parking brake cable, as required.
  11. Install the wheels.
  12. Test the brakes for proper operation.
626 and MX6
FRONT
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2. Remove some of the brake fluid from the master cylinder reservoir.
  3. Remove the wheels.
  4. Remove the caliper lower mounting bolt and pivot the caliper up and support it.
  5. Remove the brake pads, shims and pin.
  6. Using Mazda tool 49-0221-600C and the old inner brake pad, push the caliper piston into the caliper bore.

    To install:

  7. Install the brake pads and shims to the caliper support. Install the caliper over the brake pads.
  8. Install the caliper mounting bolt and torque to 22–29 ft. lbs. (30–40 Nm).
  9. Install the wheels.
  10. Test the brakes for proper operation.
REAR
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2. Remove some of the brake fluid from the master cylinder reservoir.
  3. Loosen the parking brake cable adjustment from inside the vehicle.
  4. Remove the wheels.
  5. Disconnect the parking brake cable from the cable bracket and the operating lever.
  6. Remove the upper caliper mounting bolt and pivot the caliper downward off of the pads.
  7. Remove the brake pads and spring clips from the caliper support.

    To install:

  8. Install the brake pads, shims and spring clips to the caliper support. Pivot the caliper over the brake pads.
  9. Lubricate and install the top caliper mounting bolt. Tighten the bolt to 26–28 ft. lbs. (35–39 Nm). Attach the parking brake cable to the operating lever.
  10. Adjust the parking brake cable, as required.
  11. Install the wheels.
  12. Test the brakes for proper operation.
Miata
FRONT
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2. Remove some of the brake fluid from the master cylinder reservoir.
  3. Remove the wheels.
  4. Remove the lower lockbolt, and pivot the brake caliper upwards.
  5. Remove the brake pads and shim.
  6. Using Mazda tool 49-0221-600C and the old inner brake pad, push the caliper piston into the caliper bore.

    To install:

  7. Install the brake pads and shims onto the caliper.
  8. Pivot the caliper into position. Install the lockbolt and tighten to 58–65 ft. lbs. (78–88 Nm).
  9. Install the wheels.
  10. Test the brakes for proper operation.
REAR
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2. Remove some of the brake fluid from the master cylinder reservoir.
  3. Remove the wheels.
  4. Remove the plug for the manual adjustment gear. Using an Allen wrench turn the gear counterclockwise to retract the caliper piston.
  5. Remove the lower caliper mounting bolt and pivot the caliper upward off of the pads.
  6. Remove the brake pads and spring clips from the caliper support.

    To install:

  7. Install the brake pads, shims and spring clips to the caliper support. Pivot the caliper over the brake pads.
  8. Lubricate and install the lower caliper mounting bolt. Tighten the bolt to 25–29 ft. lbs. (34–39 Nm).
  9. Turn the manual adjusting gear clockwise until the piston contacts the brake disc, then turn it clockwise 13 turn. Replace the plug.
  10. Install the wheels.
  11. Test the brakes for proper operation.
Millenia
FRONT
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2. Remove the wheels.
  3. Remove the bottom caliper lock pin and swing the caliper upwards.
  4. Remove the V-springs and remove the pads and shims.

    To install:

  5. Install the brake pads and shims. Install the V-springs
  6. Press the caliper pistons back into their cylinders and install the calipers. Torque the lock pin to 47–62 ft. lbs. (63–84 Nm).
  7. Install the wheels.
REAR
  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2. Remove the wheels.
  3. Remove the lock pin and rotate the caliper upwards.
  4. Remove the V-springs and remove the pads. Remove the shims from the pads.

    To install:

  5. Press the caliper piston back into the cylinder.
  6. Install the pads, shims, and V-springs.
  7. Install the caliper and torque the lock pin to 37–50 ft. lbs. (50–68 Nm).
  8. Install the wheels.
