NOTE: Although Ford suggests that is the camshaft and valve lifters are removable with the engine installed, depending on the particular options with which your truck is equipped, working clearance may be extremely tight. This procedure may be much easier to perform with the engine removed. Before beginning, read this procedure and make certain enough clearance, or working room, exists with the engine in the vehicle. If there is not enough space, remove the engine.
To Remove:
- Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Remove the roller followers.
- Use the cam sprocket holding/removing tool (303-098) to remove the camshaft sprocket.
- Use the front cover seal remover (303-108) to remove the camshaft seal.
- Remove the bolts and the camshaft retainer plate.
- First, remove the engine support insulator nuts then raise the front of the engine.
- Remove the camshaft with care.
To Install:
CAUTION
Make sure to lubricate the camshaft with the correct motor oil or engine damage can result.
- Install the camshaft.
- Lower the front of the engine, then install the engine support insulator nuts. Torque to 65-95 ft-lb (88-130 Nm).
- Install the camshaft retainer plate and bolts. Torque to 6-9 ft-lb (8-12 Nm).
- Install the camshaft seal with the front seal replacer tool (303-096).
- Use the cam sprocket holding/removing tool (303-098) to install the camshaft sprocket. Torque to 52-70 ft-lb (70-95 Nm).
- Install the roller followers.
- Connect the negative battery cable.
