Crankshaft Pulley

Removal & Installation

To Remove:

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

    CAUTION
Before loosening or removing the crankshaft pulley bolt you must first install the special tools noted in these instructions. The crankshaft pulley and the crankshaft timing sprocket are not keyed to the crankshaft. The crankshaft, the crankshaft sprocket, and the pulley are fitted together by friction using diamond washers between the flange faces on each part. Because of this, the crankshaft sprocket is also unfastened if you loosen the pulley bolt. Before any repair requiring loosening or removal of the crankshaft pulley bolt, the crankshaft and camshafts must be locked in place by the special tools, otherwise severe damage may occur.

    CAUTION
Cleanliness is very important during any engine repair procedure. Engine failure can be caused by any foreign material that enters the oil passages, coolant passages, or the oil pan. This includes material created while cleaning gasket surfaces. Make sure no foreign material enters these locations.

  3. Remove the fan and shroud.
  4. Remove the drive belt.

    CAUTION
You must use a three-bolt puller to remove the crankshaft pulley assembly. Do not use a pry bar or other tools because they can damage the crankshaft pulley assembly.

  5. Remove the crankshaft pulley.

To Install:

CAUTION
Install the washer on the bolt. Without it, the crankshaft pulley assembly cannot be tightened to the correct specifications.

  1. Install the crankshaft pulley assembly, the bolt, and the washer.
  2. Install the drive belt.
  3. Tighten the bolt. Torque to 93-121 ft-lb (125-165 Nm).
  4. Install the fan and shroud.
