Axle Shaft, Bearing & Seal

Removal & Installation

To Remove:

NOTE: The axle housing vent might be plugged with foreign material if the wheel bearing oil seal is leaking.

NOTE: If it only necessary to install a new seal, be careful not to damage the seal bore.

  1. Remove the axle shaft.
  2. Use an appropriate seal remover to remove the axle shaft oil seal. Throw away the seal.
  3. Examine the rear wheel bearing and axle shaft to look for signs of damage or wear.
  4. If needed, use the axle bearing remover (205-219) and the slide hammer (100-001) to remove the rear wheel bearing.

To Install:

  1. Lubricate the new rear wheel bearing.
  2. Use the axle shaft bearing installer (205-124) and the adapter handle for the 303-224 (205-153) to install the rear wheel bearing.
  3. Use grease to lubricate the lip of the new wheel bearing oil seal.
  4. Use the rear axle oil seal installer (205-390) adapter handle for the 303-224 (205-153) to install the wheel bearing oil seal.
  5. Install the axle shaft.
