Removal & Installation

To Remove:

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Disconnect the clutch master cylinder push rod from the clutch pedal.
  3. Raise the vehicle on a hoist.
  4. Remove the starter motor.
  5. Disconnect the quick connector at the transmission with a clutch coupling tool (special tool #308-182).
  6. Remove the transmission.

    CAUTION
Loosen the bolts evenly to prevent clutch pressure plate damage.

NOTE: If the parts are to be reused, mark the clutch pressure plate and the flywheel.

  7. Remove the bolts and remove the clutch pressure plate and the clutch disc.

To Install:

CAUTION
To avoid damage do not force the adjusting ring. Extra pressure may be needed on the diaphragm fingers if the adjusting ring does not easily turn.

NOTE: Clean the clutch pressure plate and flywheel with a commercial alcohol based solvent so surfaces are free from oil film.

  1. Do not use cleaners with a petroleum base. Do not immerse the clutch pressure plate in the solvent.

NOTE: The clutch pressure plate should always be adjusted before installation.

  2. Compress the clutch diaphragm fingers. Position the clutch pressure plate in a press. Use a suitable adapter and press the clutch diaphragm fingers until the adjusting ring moves freely.
  3. Adjust the clutch pressure plate. Turn the adjusting ring counterclockwise until the tension springs are compressed. Hold adjusting ring while releasing the pressure on the clutch diaphragm fingers.
  4. Correctly position the clutch disc onto the flywheel. Use the clutch aligner to line up the clutch disc.

NOTE: If reusing the clutch pressure plate, line up using the marks you made during removal.

  5. Position the clutch pressure plate onto the flywheel dowels. Line up the clutch pressure plate. Install the bolts. Torque to 17-24 ft-lb (23-32 Nm). Remove the clutch aligner (special tool #308-020).
  6. Install the transmission and the starter motor.
  7. Safely lower the vehicle. Connect the clutch master cylinder push rod to the clutch pedal.
  8. Connect the negative battery cable.
