Compressor

Removal & Installation

CAUTION
If installing a new air conditioning compressor due to an internal failure of the old unit, you must flush the air conditioning system prior to installing a new air conditioning compressor.

CAUTION
Only refrigerant oil (Motorcraft YN-12c) should be used to lubricate the O-ring seals. Only PAG refrigerant compressor oil (F7AZ-19589-DA/Motorcraft YN-12-C) or an equivalent meeting the manufacturer’s specification should be used as an A/C compressor lubricant.

NOTE: The compressor contains refrigerant oil. Do not allow the oil to drain out of the compressor. Any oil that drains out of the compressor must be replaced.

To Remove:

  1. Recover the refrigerant from the A/C system.
  2. Reposition the air cleaner outlet tube by loosening the clamp, disconnecting the crankcase ventilation tube, and then repositioning the air cleaner outlet tube.
  3. Remove the drive belt.
  4. Disconnect the electrical connector from the A/C compressor.
  5. Remove the clamp nut on the A/C manifold and tube assembly.
  6. Remove the manifold retaining bolt.
  7. Remove the bolts and the A/C compressor.
  8. Throw away the O-ring seals.

To Install:

NOTE: Apply pipe sealant with Teflon® D8AZ-19554-A onto the threads of the A/C manifold retaining bolt.

  1. Install the A/C compressor and bolts. Tighten to 17-20 ft-lb (22-28 Nm).
  2. Install the manifold retaining bolt. Tighten to 13-17 ft-lb (17-23 Nm).
  3. Install the clamp nut onto the A/C manifold and tube assembly. Tighten to 62-80 in-lb (7-9 Nm).
  4. Connect the electrical connector to the A/C compressor.
  5. Install the drive belt.
  6. Position the air cleaner outlet tube correctly. Tighten to 36-54 in-lb (4-6 Nm).
  7. Recharge the air conditioning system with the proper type and amount of refrigerant.
  8. Check the operation of the air conditioning system.
