Cylinder Head

Removal & Installation

To Remove:

NOTE: It may be easier to remove the engine from the vehicle. If removing the engine, refer to the engine removal procedure.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2. Put the vehicle in neutral and position it on a hoist.
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4. Evacuate the A/C system.
  5. Drain the cooling system.
  6. Drain the engine oil.
  7. Remove the lower intake manifold.
  8. Remove the A/C compressor and the generator (GEN).
  9. Remove the power steering pump and the generator mounting bracket.
  10. Remove the rocker arms and the push rods.
  11. Remove the two stud bolts from the rear of the A/C compressor mounting bracket.
  12. Remove the bolts and remove the front of the A/C compressor mounting bracket.
  13. Safely raise and support the vehicle.
  14. Remove the exhaust manifolds.
  15. Remove and throw away the eight cylinder head bolts.
  16. Remove the cylinder heads.
  17. Remove and throw away the cylinder head gaskets.

To Install:

NOTE: The "V" in the cylinder head gasket must face the front of the engine.

  1. Clean the mating surfaces where the head attaches to the engine.
  2. Check the cylinder head for flatness.
  3. Install a new cylinder head gasket and the cylinder heads to the engine.
  4. Install new bolts and tighten them as indicated below.

  5. Install the lower intake manifold and the exhaust manifolds.
  6. Install the A/C compressor mounting bracket. Torque to 34 ft-lb (46 Nm).
  7. Install the stud bolts to the A/C compressor mounting bracket. Torque to 35 ft-lb (48 Nm).
  8. Position the wiring harness bracket and the fuel tube bracket and install the nuts. Torque to 89 in-lb (10 Nm).
  9. Install the push rods and rocker arms.
  10. Install the generator mounting bracket. Torque to 34 ft-lb (46 Nm).
  11. Install the power steering pump.
  12. Install the generator.
  13. Install the A/C compressor.
  14. Connect the negative battery cable.
  15. Drain the engine oil and fill with clean oil.
  16. Fill and bleed the cooling system.
  17. Fill the power steering system.
  18. Recharge the A/C system.
  19. Start the vehicle and check for leaks, repair if necessary.
