To Remove:
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Disconnect engine control sensor wiring from the ignition coil and disconnect the spark plug wires from the right-hand spark plugs.
- Disconnect the engine control sensor wiring from the intake air temperature (IAT) sensor and the mass air flow (MAF) sensor.
- Disconnect the vacuum line.
- Remove the ignition coil bracket.
- Disconnect the crankcase ventilation tube.
NOTE: Slide a flat knife between the valve cover gasket and cylinder head to loosen the silicone gasket and sealant from the cylinder head. This will keep the valve cover gasket from stretching.
- Remove the bolts, valve cover, and if necessary, the gasket.
To Install:
CAUTION
Do not clean the valve cover gasket with solvent. This can cause damage to the valve cover gasket.
- Clean all mating surfaces.
- Install the valve cover gasket, if it had been removed earlier.
NOTE: The valve cover must be installed within 4 minutes. If it is not, remove the sealant and reapply.
- Apply a bead of silicone gasket and sealant in the two places where the cylinder head and lower intake manifold meet, as illustrated below.

- Connect the crankcase ventilation tube.
- Install the ignition coil bracket and nuts. Torque to 12-14 ft-lb (16-20 Nm).
- Connect the vacuum line then connect the engine control sensor wiring to the MAF sensor and the IAT sensor.
- Connect the spark plug wires to the right-hand spark plugs then connect the engine control sensor wiring to the ignition coil.
- Connect the negative battery cable.
To Remove:
- Remove the upper intake manifold.
- Disconnect the left spark plug wire holders.
- Disconnect the engine control harness from the valve cover studs.
- Remove the 8 bolts.
NOTE: Slide a flat knife between the valve cover gasket and cylinder head to loosen the silicone gasket and sealant from the cylinder head. This will keep the valve cover gasket from stretching.
