Valve Cover

Removal & Installation

Right Valve Cover

To Remove:

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Disconnect engine control sensor wiring from the ignition coil and disconnect the spark plug wires from the right-hand spark plugs.
  3. Disconnect the engine control sensor wiring from the intake air temperature (IAT) sensor and the mass air flow (MAF) sensor.
  4. Disconnect the vacuum line.
  5. Remove the ignition coil bracket.
  6. Disconnect the crankcase ventilation tube.

NOTE: Slide a flat knife between the valve cover gasket and cylinder head to loosen the silicone gasket and sealant from the cylinder head. This will keep the valve cover gasket from stretching.

  7. Remove the bolts, valve cover, and if necessary, the gasket.

To Install:

CAUTION
Do not clean the valve cover gasket with solvent. This can cause damage to the valve cover gasket.

  1. Clean all mating surfaces.
  2. Install the valve cover gasket, if it had been removed earlier.

NOTE: The valve cover must be installed within 4 minutes. If it is not, remove the sealant and reapply.

  3. Apply a bead of silicone gasket and sealant in the two places where the cylinder head and lower intake manifold meet, as illustrated below.

  5. Connect the crankcase ventilation tube.
  6. Install the ignition coil bracket and nuts. Torque to 12-14 ft-lb (16-20 Nm).
  7. Connect the vacuum line then connect the engine control sensor wiring to the MAF sensor and the IAT sensor.
  8. Connect the spark plug wires to the right-hand spark plugs then connect the engine control sensor wiring to the ignition coil.
  9. Connect the negative battery cable.
Left Valve Cover

To Remove:

  1. Remove the upper intake manifold.
  2. Disconnect the left spark plug wire holders.
  3. Disconnect the engine control harness from the valve cover studs.
  4. Remove the 8 bolts.

NOTE: Slide a flat knife between the valve cover gasket and cylinder head to loosen the silicone gasket and sealant from the cylinder head. This will keep the valve cover gasket from stretching.

  5. Remove the valve cover.
  6. Remove the valve cover gasket, if necessary.
