Fluid Pan, Gasket, & Filter

Removal & Installation

To Remove:

  1. Put the vehicle in NEUTRAL then raise and safely support the vehicle.

NOTE: If present, the transmission servo heat shield must be unclipped from the fluid pan rail and positioned out of the way for fluid pan removal.

  2. If present, loosen the nut and position the heat shield out of the way.
  3. Drain the transmission fluid. To do this, remove all the transmission fluid pan screws except for two in the front. Loosen the 2 front transmission fluid pan screws. Pry the rear of the transmission fluid pan down and allow fluid to drain. After fluid is drained, remove the front 2 transmission fluid pan screws.
  4. Remove the transmission fluid pan then remove and throw away the transmission fluid pan gasket.
  5. Remove the transmission fluid filter screw then remove and throw away the transmission fluid filter.
  6. Clean and examine the transmission fluid pan and magnet. Clean all mating surfaces.

To Install:

CAUTION
Fluid filter O-ring seals must be lubricated with clean automatic transmission fluid. Using anything else for lubrication can cause damage to the O-ring seals.

  1. Place the transmission fluid filter onto the main control valve body.
  2. Lubricate and install new O-ring seals onto the transmission fluid filter.
  3. Install a new transmission fluid filter. Torque fastener to 71-97 in-lb (8-11 Nm).
  4. Place the fluid pan magnet into the transmission fluid pan.
  5. Place a new transmission fluid pan gasket on the transmission fluid pan then install the transmission fluid pan and loosely install the transmission fluid pan screws.
  6. Tighten the transmission fluid pan screws in a crisscross sequence. Torque to 115-133 in-lb (13-15 Nm).
  7. If present, place the servo heat shield over the servos and clip it to the pan rail. Torque to 89 in-lb (10 Nm).

NOTE: Be sure to have at least 4 quarts (3.7 liters) of clean automatic transmission fluid on hand when you are ready to fill the transmission.

  8. Fill the transmission to the correct fluid level with clean automatic transmission fluid.
  9. Apply the parking brake and start the engine.
  10. Move the range selector lever through all of the gears.
  11. Check the transmission fluid level.
