Steering Column

Removal & Installation

To Remove:

  1. Position the steering wheel so it faces straight ahead and turn the ignition switch OFF.
  2. Depower the supplemental restraint system (SRS).
  3. Remove the lower steering column opening finish panel.
  4. Remove the bolts and the lower steering column opening finish panel reinforcement.
  5. Disconnect the electrical connector for the ignition switch.
  6. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
  7. Disconnect the electrical connectors for the clockspring.
  8. On vehicles with automatic transmission ONLY: Remove the transmission range indicator from the steering column. Next, disconnect the shift cable from the steering column.
  9. Disconnect the electrical connector for the brake shift interlock solenoid.

    NOTE: Secure the steering column so it does not move once the pinch bolt is removed.

  10. Remove the pinch bolt and detach the upper intermediate shaft from the steering column.
  11. Remove the lower nuts from the steering column.
  12. Remove the nuts and the steering column.

To Install:

  1. Install the steering column and nuts. Torque to 11 ft-lb (15 Nm).
  2. Install the lower nuts on the steering column. Torque to 11 ft-lb (15 Nm).
  3. Attach the upper intermediate shaft to the steering column and install a new pinch bolt. Torque to 22 ft-lb (30 Nm).
  4. Connect the electrical connector for the brake shift interlock solenoid.
  5. On vehicles with automatic transmission ONLY: Install the transmission range indicator to the steering column. Torque to 27 in-lb (3 Nm). Next, connect the shift cable to the steering column.
  6. Connect the electrical connectors for the clockspring.
  7. Connect the electrical connectors.
  8. Connect the electrical connector for the ignition switch.
  9. Install the bolts and the lower steering column opening finish panel reinforcement.
  10. Install the lower steering column opening finish panel.
  11. Power the SRS.
