Removal & Installation

WARNING
When repairing starter motor or doing maintenance near the starter motor, be aware that the heavy gauge input lead connected to the starter solenoid is hot at all times. Make sure a new protective cap is installed over the terminal after the repair.

To Remove:

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the ground strap bolt and nuts then lower the starter motor.
  3. Remove the cap.
  4. Remove the terminal nuts.
  5. Remove the starter motor.

To Install:

  1. Install the starter motor.
  2. Install the terminal nuts. Torque upper bolt to 98-115 in-lb (11-13 Nm) and lower bolt to 45-53 in-lb (5-6 Nm).
  3. Install the cap.
  4. Raise the starter motor and install the nuts. Torque to 17-20 ft-lb (22-28 Nm).
  5. Install the ground strap bolt. Torque to 15-18 in-lb (20-25 Nm).
  6. Connect the negative battery cable.
