To Disarm:
WARNING
To reduce the risk of injury, wear safety glasses when working on an air bag supplemental restraint system (SRS) and when handling an air bag module. This will provide protection in case of accidental air bag deployment.
WARNING
Do not probe the connectors on the air bag module because this may cause air bag deployment, which may cause personal injury.
WARNING
Do not use any type of memory saver device during this procedure as it may cause personal injury.
WARNING
The SRS must be depowered if a seat with a safety belt pretensioner and/or a seat-mounted side air bag is being serviced.
WARNING
The SRS must be completely and properly operational and have no faults before anyone drives the vehicle. Failure to ensure this may result in personal injury.
NOTE: When the restraints control module (RCM) fuse is removed and the ignition switch is turned on, the air bag warning lamp will light up. This is normal and does not indicate an SRS problem.
WARNING
The backup power supply MUST be completely depleted before repairing or replacing any front or side air bag SRS components and before servicing, replacing, adjusting, or striking components near the front or side air bag sensors or RCM, such as doors, instrument panel, console, door latches, strikers, seats, and hood latches. This will reduce the possibility of accidental deployment, which can cause personal injury.
Disconnect the negative battery cable and wait at least one minute to deplete the backup power supply energy. Be sure to disconnect auxiliary batteries and power supplies, if equipped.
To Arm:
WARNING
The restraint system diagnostic tool (418-F088) is only to be used for restraint system service and should be removed from the vehicle before road use. Failure to remove this tool can result in personal injury and a violation of vehicle safety standards.
WARNING
When the negative battery cable is connected, make sure that no one is in the vehicle and that there is nothing blocking or placed in front of any of the air bag modules.
A flashing light may not be visible until about 30 seconds after the ignition switch has been turned ON. This is because the RCM takes this amount of time to complete the SRS testing. If there is an SRS fault, a chime will sound in a pattern of 5 sets of 5 beeps. If this happens, the air bag indicator and any SRS fault must be diagnosed and repaired. Clear all discontinuous DTCs from the RCM using a scan tool.
