WARNING
Asbestos fiber dust may be on brake and clutch assemblies and is extremely hazardous to health if inhaled.
Brake and clutch assemblies must be cleaned using a vacuum cleaner specifically recommended for use with asbestos fibers, such as a brake/clutch/service vacuum (164-R3622). The bag must be labeled according to OSHA instructions, then sealed, and the trash hauler must be notified of the bag's contents.
WARNING
If a vacuum cleaner that is appropriate for asbestos is not available, cleaning must be done wet. If it is still possible to generate dust, technicians must wear government-approved toxic dust purifying respirators.
According to the occupational safety and health act (OSHA), areas where asbestos dust generation is possible must be isolated and have warning signs posted. Only technicians performing brake or clutch repair can be present in that area.
WARNING
Always install new rear brake shoes and linings at both ends of an axle to minimize the possibility of uneven braking.
NOTE: Be sure the parking brake control is completely released.
CAUTION
It is not recommended to use a brake drum puller or a torch because it can result in brake drum distortion.
NOTE: If the brake drum is rusted to the axle shaft pilot diameter, then tap the center of the brake drum between the wheel studs.
NOTE: If the brake drum will not come off, loosen the brake shoe adjusting screw nut then use a screwdriver to move the brake shoe adjusting lever off of the brake adjuster screw. Next, move the brake adjustment tool (206-D003) handle down to loosen the nut.
