PRECAUTIONS

Several precautions must be observed when handling the inflator module to avoid accidental deployment and possible personal injury.

  1. Never carry the inflator module by the wires or connector on the underside of the module.
  2. When carrying a live inflator module, hold securely with both hands, and ensure that the bag and trim cover are pointed away.
  3. Place the inflator module on a bench or other surface with the bag and trim cover facing up.
  4. With the inflator module on the bench, never place anything on or close to the module which may be thrown in the event of an accidental deployment.
  5. An air bag is an explosive device. Handle with extreme caution.
  6. Always disconnect the battery and the air bag connector before removing the steering wheel or beginning work on the air bag system.
  7. Air bag components must not be repaired or opened. Always use new parts, including the wiring harness.
  8. Always place a removed air bag unit with the horn pad facing up. Put it in a safe place where it will not be disturbed.
  9. The air bag unit must not be exposed to grease, fluids, or cleaning agents.
  10. The air bag unit must not be exposed to temperatures above 194°F (90°C) at any time. Even the heat of a soldering iron can damage or ignite the charge.
  11. Storage and transport of air bags is subject to rules governing explosive devices and should be done only in the original package.
  12. Failure to follow proper safety precautions may result in personal injury through accidental firing of the air bag, or through failure of the air bag in an accident.
