NOTE: The oil pump is located on the front of the engine and
is turned by the timing belt.
- Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning
of this section.
- Remove or disconnect the following:
- Negative battery cable
- Timing belt
- Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor electrical connector
- Oil pump sprocket
- CMP sensor
NOTE: Use a prybar or drift through one of the holes in
the pump sprocket to keep it from turning while loosening the bolt.
- 4 bolts retaining the oil pump to the engine block
- Oil pump from the front of the engine and discard the gasket
- Inspect the oil pump and O-rings and replace as necessary.
- Clean all gasket mating surfaces thoroughly.
To install:
- Prime the oil pump and with 8 ounces (236ml) of new engine oil and lubricate
the O-rings.
- Install or connect the following:
- New gasket on the oil pump
- Oil pump. Torque the bolts to 89 inch lbs. (10 Nm).
- CMP sensor. Torque the bolts to 61 inch lbs. (7 Nm).
- Oil pump sprocket bolt. Torque the bolt to 40 ft. lbs. (55 Nm).
- CMP sensor electrical connector
- Timing belt
- Negative battery cable
- Fill the engine with clean oil.
- Start the vehicle and check for leaks, repair if necessary.
NOTE: On 4.0L Rangers it is necessary to remove the engine
and on 1997 Aerostar models the transmission must be removed.
- Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning
of this section.
- Drain the engine oil.
- Remove or disconnect the following:
- Negative battery cable
- Oil pan
- Oil pick-up and tube assembly from the pump
- Oil pump retainer bolts and the oil pump
To install:
- Prime the oil pump with clean engine oil by filling either the inlet or

- 4.0L: 13–15 ft. lbs. (18–20 Nm).
WARNING
Do not force the oil pump if it does not seat readily. The oil pump driveshaft
may be misaligned with the distributor or shaft assembly. If the pump is
tightened down with the driveshaft misaligned, damage to the pump could
occur. To align, rotate the intermediate driveshaft into a new position.
- Install or connect the following:
- Oil pick-up and tube assembly
- Oil pan
- Fill the engine with clean oil.
