Axle Housing

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
2. Drain the axle housing fluid.
3. Support the vehicle at the frame.
4. Support the rear axle with a floor jack.
5. Remove or disconnect the following:
   • Negative battery cable
   • Rear wheels
   • Rear brake drums
   • Axle shafts and matchmark the driveshaft and pinion flanges for proper installation
   • Driveshaft and wire it out of the way
   • Axle housing vent tube
   • Brake hose junction block
   • Brake drum backing plates
   • Shock absorber lower bolts
   • Rear axle U-bolts
   • Axle housing

   To install:

6. Install or connect the following:
   • Axle housing
   • U-bolts. Torque the bolts to 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm).
   • Shock absorber lower bolts. Torque the bolts to 50 ft. lbs. (68 Nm).
   • Brake drum backing plates
   • Brake hose junction block
   • Axle housing vent tube
   • Driveshaft
   • Axle shafts using the matchmarks made during removal
   • Rear Brake drums
   • Rear wheels
   • Negative battery cable
7. Fill the axle fluid to the proper level.
