- Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning
of this section.
- Drain the axle housing fluid.
- Support the vehicle at the frame.
- Support the rear axle with a floor jack.
- Remove or disconnect the following:
- Negative battery cable
- Rear wheels
- Rear brake drums
- Axle shafts and matchmark the driveshaft and pinion flanges for proper
installation
- Driveshaft and wire it out of the way
- Axle housing vent tube
- Brake hose junction block
- Brake drum backing plates
- Shock absorber lower bolts
- Rear axle U-bolts
- Axle housing
To install:
- Install or connect the following:
- Axle housing
- U-bolts. Torque the bolts to 76 ft. lbs. (103 Nm).
- Shock absorber lower bolts. Torque the bolts to 50 ft. lbs. (68 Nm).
- Brake drum backing plates
- Brake hose junction block
- Axle housing vent tube
- Driveshaft
- Axle shafts using the matchmarks made during removal
- Rear Brake drums
- Rear wheels
- Negative battery cable
- Fill the axle fluid to the proper level.
