Instrument Panel

Removal & Installation

To Remove:

CAUTION
If electronic modules are exposed to static electrical charges, damage may occur.

  1. Depower the supplemental restraint system (SRS).
  2. Lock the steering column then remove the front seats.
  3. Remove the screws and position the parking brake release handle aside.
  4. Remove the front door scuff plates.
  5. Remove the left-hand and right-hand lower cowl kick panels and the pin-type retainer.
  6. Remove the screws and position the hood release handle aside.
  7. Remove the instrument panel steering column cover.
  8. Remove the instrument panel steering column opening cover reinforcement and bolts.
  9. Disconnect the electrical connector for the brake pedal position (BPP) switch.
  10. If present, disconnect the electrical connector for the clutch pedal position (CPP) switch.
  11. If present, disconnect the shift cable from the steering column shift tube lever then disconnect the shift cable from the steering column bracket.
  12. Disconnect the upper intermediate steering shaft from the steering column shaft and remove the pinch bolt.
  13. Remove the left-hand and right-hand windshield side garnish moldings by first removing the bolts and the assist handle.
  14. Remove the door moldings.
  15. Disconnect the electrical connectors and the ground wire from the right-hand side lower kick panel.

    CAUTION
    Make sure the release tab is completely depressed before pulling the release lever into the disconnect position. This will avoid causing damage to the bulkhead electrical connectors.

  16. Disconnect the left-hand side electrical connector for the bulkhead.
  17. Remove the audio unit using the radio removing tool (T87P-19061-A).
  18. Disconnect the electrical connector for the audio unit and the antenna cable.
  19. Press the release tabs inward while lowering the glove compartment.
  20. Through the glove compartment opening, disconnect the blend door actuator electrical connector and the climate control vacuum harness connector.
  21. Press the release tabs inward while raising the glove compartment.
  22. Remove the instrument panel defroster opening grille.
  23. Remove the instrument panel cowl top bolts.
  24. If present, remove the floor console.
  25. On early-build vehicles ONLY: If no high-series floor console is present, remove the cup holders, then release the clips and remove the restraints control module (RCM) cover.
  26. On late-build vehicles ONLY: If no high-series floor console is present, remove the consolette mat, then remove the screws and the RCM cover. Next, remove the consolette base.
  27. On vehicles with manual transmission ONLY: Remove the gearshift lever and the manual transmission consolette.
  28. Disconnect the electrical connector for the RCM.
  29. Pull back the floor carpeting.
  30. Disconnect the instrument panel main harness.
  31. Remove the instrument panel side finish panel.
  32. Disconnect the electrical connector for the door harness.
  33. Remove the right-hand side instrument panel bolt.
  34. Remove the left-hand instrument panel cowl side bolts.
  35. Using two technicians, position the instrument panel in such a way as to get access to the electrical connector for the door harness.
  36. Disconnect the electrical connector for the door harness.
  37. Using two technicians, remove the instrument panel.

To Install:

CAUTION
If electronic modules are exposed to static electrical charges, damage may occur.

  1. Using two technicians, connect the electrical connector for the door harness, and then install the instrument panel.
  2. Install the left-hand instrument panel cowl side bolts.
  3. Install the right-hand side instrument panel bolt.
  4. Connect the electrical connector for the door harness.
  5. Install the instrument panel side finish panel.
  6. Connect the instrument panel main harness.
  7. Put back the floor carpeting.
  8. Connect the electrical connector for the RCM.
  9. On vehicles with manual transmission ONLY: Install the gearshift lever and the manual transmission consolette.
  10. On late-build vehicles ONLY: If no high-series floor console is present, install the consolette base, the RCM cover and screws, and the consolette mat.
  11. On early-build vehicles ONLY: If no high-series floor console is present, install the RCM cover, put the clips on, and install the cup holders.
  12. If present, install the floor console.
  13. Install the instrument panel cowl top bolts.
  14. Install the instrument panel defroster opening grille.
  15. Press the release tabs inward while lowering the glove compartment.
  16. Through the glove compartment opening, connect the blend door actuator electrical connector and the climate control vacuum harness connector.
  17. Press the release tabs inward while raising the glove compartment.
  18. Connect the electrical connector for the audio unit and the antenna cable.
  19. Install the audio unit.
  20. Connect the left-hand side electrical connector for the bulkhead.
  21. Connect the electrical connectors and the ground wire to the right-hand side lower kick panel.
  22. Install the door moldings.
  23. Install the left-hand and right-hand windshield side garnish moldings.
  24. Connect the upper intermediate steering shaft to the steering column shaft and install the pinch bolt.
  25. If present, connect the shift cable to the steering column bracket then connect the shift cable to the steering column shift tube lever.
  26. If present, connect the electrical connector for the clutch pedal position (CPP) switch.
  27. Connect the electrical connector for the brake pedal position (BPP) switch.
  28. Install the instrument panel steering column opening cover reinforcement and bolts.
  29. Install the instrument panel steering column cover.
  30. Correctly position the hood release handle and install the screws.
  31. Install the left-hand and right-hand lower cowl kick panels and the pin-type retainer.
  32. Install the front door scuff plates.
  33. Correctly position the parking brake release handle and install the screws.
  34. Install the front seats then unlock the steering column.
  35. Repower the SRS.
