Oil Pump

Removal & Installation

To Remove:

NOTE: The oil pump is located on the front of the engine and is turned by the timing chain.

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Remove the timing chain.
  4. Remove the oil pump chain and sprockets.
  5. Remove the oil pan.
  6. Remove the oil pump pickup tube and gasket.
  7. Remove the oil pump assembly and gasket.

To Install:

  1. Turn the crankshaft clockwise to position the No. 1 piston.
  2. Remove the plug bolt.
  3. Install the engine timing peg (303-507).

    NOTE: Clean the gasket surface with metal surface cleaner.

  4. Install a new gasket and the oil pump assembly. Tighten the bolts in the sequence shown in two stages:
  5. Install a new oil pump pickup tube gasket and the pickup tube.

    NOTE: Refer to specific procedures elsewhere in this chapter for reinstallation procedures as necessary.

  6. Reinstall the oil pan, oil pump and sprockets, and timing chain.
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8. Start the engine and check for leaks. Repair if necessary.
