WARNING
Asbestos fiber dust may be on brake and clutch assemblies and is extremely hazardous to health if inhaled.
Brake and clutch assemblies must be cleaned using a vacuum cleaner specifically recommended for use with asbestos fibers, such as a brake/clutch/service vacuum (164-R3622). The bag must be labeled according to OSHA instructions, then sealed, and the trash hauler must be notified of the bag's contents.
WARNING
If a vacuum cleaner that is appropriate for asbestos is not available, cleaning must be done wet. If it is still possible to generate dust, technicians must wear government-approved toxic dust purifying respirators.
According to the occupational safety and health act (OSHA), areas where asbestos dust generation is possible must be isolated and have warning signs posted. Only technicians performing brake or clutch repair can be present in that area.
WARNING
Always install new rear brake shoes and linings at both ends of an axle to minimize the possibility of uneven braking.
NOTE: Once you have adjusted the rear brake shoes and linings, check to see if the parking brake is operating correctly. Be sure the parking brake cable equalizer is operating freely.
NOTE: To tighten the brake adjuster screw, move the brake adjustment tool (206-D003) handle upward. Next, turn the brake shoe adjusting screw nut until the brake drum starts to drag, then loosen the brake adjuster screw until the brake drum rotates easily.
