Brake Shoes

Removal & Installation

To Remove:

  1. Remove the brake drum.
  2. Examine the rear brake assembly for the following:

    NOTE: Make note of the locations of the long and short brake shoe retracting springs, which will help with the installation procedure.

  3. Remove the brake shoe retracting springs.
  4. Remove the adjusting screw assembly.
  5. Remove the brake shoe anchor pin guide plate and the parking brake strut.
  6. Remove the rear brake shoes and linings.
  7. Pull back the parking brake cable spring and disconnect the parking brake lever.

To Install:

  1. Compress the parking brake cable spring and attach the parking brake lever.
  2. Clean then lubricate the brake backing plate using Silicone Brake Caliper Grease and Dielectric Compound XG3 or an equivalent meeting the manufacturer’s specifications.
  3. Install the rear brake shoes and linings.
  4. Install the parking brake strut.
  5. Install the short brake shoe retracting spring.

    NOTE: Be sure that the brake shoe adjusting lever cable is placed in the cable guide groove.

  6. Install the retracting spring for the long brake shoe.

    NOTE: To avoid incorrect installation, notice that the socket end of each brake adjuster screw has either an R or an L stamped on it.

  7. Put together then install the brake adjuster screw assembly.
  8. Test to see if the automatic self-adjuster is working correctly.
  9. Adjust the brakes, if necessary.
  10. Install the brake drum.
