Camshaft & Lash Adjusters

Removal & Installation

NOTE: Although Ford suggests that is the camshaft and valve liters are removable with the engine installed, depending on the particular options with which your truck is equipped, working clearance may be extremely tight. This procedure may be much easier to perform with the engine removed. Before beginning, read this procedure and make certain enough clearance, or working room, exists with the engine in the vehicle. If there is not enough space, remove the engine.

To Remove:

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2. Remove the radiator assembly.
  3. Remove the hydraulic lash adjusters.
  4. Remove the timing chain.
  5. Remove the camshaft synchronizer assembly.
  6. Remove the bolts and the camshaft thrust plate.

    CAUTION
Damage to the camshaft and/or the camshaft bearings can occur if the camshaft is allowed to drop on the bearing surface or cylinder block.

  7. Carefully slide the camshaft out of the engine block, using caution to avoid any damage to the camshaft bearings.

To Install:

CAUTION
Damage to the camshaft and/or the camshaft bearings can occur if the camshaft is allowed to drop on the bearing surface or cylinder block.

NOTE: Lubricate the camshaft, the camshaft bearings, the camshaft position sensor drive gear, and the camshaft thrust plate with clean engine oil before installing.

  1. Install the camshaft.
  2. Install the camshaft thrust plate and bolts.
  3. Measure the camshaft end play.

    CAUTION
If you are installing a new camshaft, add the rest of the clean engine oil to the engine oil by pouring it through the distributor hole onto the camshaft drive gear. Run the engine at idle for 5 minutes before driving the vehicle. Be sure to entirely coat the camshaft synchronizer gear teeth with clean engine oil.

  4. Install the camshaft synchronizer assembly.
  5. Install the timing chain.
  6. Install the hydraulic lash adjusters.
  7. Install the radiator assembly.
  8. Connect the negative battery cable.
  9. Drain the engine oil, then refill with clean engine oil.
  10. Refill the cooling system.
  11. Start the engine and check the ignition timing and idle speed. Adjust if necessary. Run the engine at fast idle and check for coolant, fuel, vacuum, or oil leaks.
