Timing Chain, Sprockets, Front Cover and Seal

Removal & Installation

To Remove:

  1. Before servicing the vehicle, refer to the precautions in the beginning of this section.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Drain the engine coolant.
  4. Drain the engine oil.
  5. Remove the accessory drive belt.
  6. Remove the fan and shroud assembly.
  7. Remove the water pump pulley.
  8. Disconnect the lower radiator hose from the water pump.
  9. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
  10. Remove the vibration damper using special tool 303-009. Remove the crankshaft keyway when required.
  11. Remove the oil pan.
  12. Remove the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor.
  13. If the crankshaft seal is being replaced, remove it at this time.
  14. Remove the front cover and the water pump as an assembly.
  15. Rotate the crankshaft and align the timing marks. The crankshaft must point to the 12 o’clock position and the camshaft must point to the 6 o’clock position.
  16. Remove the camshaft sprocket bolt.
  17. Remove the timing chain, the camshaft sprocket, and the crankshaft sprocket as an assembly.

To Install:

  1. Set up the timing chain and sprockets with the timing marks aligned. The crankshaft must point to the 12 o’clock position and the camshaft must point to the 6 o’clock position.
  2. Install the timing chain and sprockets as an assembly.
  3. Install the camshaft sprocket bolt.
  4. Ensure that all sealing surfaces are clean, then position a new front cover gasket.
  5. Align the engine front cover onto the engine block.
  6. Apply pipe sealant with Teflon® to bolts that seal the water jacket on the right side of the block.
  7. Install the engine front cover bolts.
  8. If the crankshaft seal is being replaced perform the following:
  9. Install the crankshaft position sensor.
  10. Install the oil pan.
  11. Install the crankshaft keyway if removed.
  12. Coat the seal mating surfaces of the crankshaft damper with engine oil and apply a layer or silicone gasket material in the keyway slot.
  13. Install the crankshaft vibration damper with special tool 303-175.
  14. Install the crankshaft pulley.
  15. Connect the lower radiator hose to the water pump.
  16. Install the water pump pulley.
  17. Install the fan and shroud assembly.
  18. Install the accessory drive belt.
  19. Connect the negative battery cable.
  20. Fill the engine with oil.
  21. Fill and bleed the cooling system.
  22. Start the engine. Check for leaks and repair as necessary.
