Removal & Installation

Front

To Remove:

1. Raise and support the vehicle.
2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.

   CAUTION
   If the pads are worn out to or past their required thickness above the metal backing plate or rivets, replace the pads in complete axle sets.

3. Examine the pads for wear or contamination.
4. Remove the lower caliper bolt.
5. Rotate the disc brake caliper upward.
6. Remove the pads and the stainless steel slippers then throw away the slippers.
7. Measure the brake disc and hub for the required minimum thickness. If not within the specifications, replace the brake disc and hub.
8. If necessary, resurface the brake disc. On-vehicle rotor machining is recommended by the manufacturer.
9. Examine the disc brake caliper for leaks.

To Install:

NOTE: Unless installing new pins, do not remove the anchor pins.

1. Examine the anchor plate guide pins. They should slide in and out of the anchor plates freely. Check the boots for tears and cracks. If the pins do not slide easily or the boots are torn or cracked, install new boots and pins. Lubricate the pins with Silicone Brake Caliper Grease and Dielectric Compound XG-6 or an equivalent substitute that meets Ford’s specifications.

   CAUTION
   When installing service brake pads, replacement of the stainless steel slippers is mandatory, even if the slippers appear to be undamaged. Be sure the slippers are positioned correctly with the slipper ends fitting snugly against the outboard end of the anchor plate rail.

   NOTE: Clean the mating surfaces of the anchor plate slipper.

   NOTE: The inboard pad has a wear-indicator tab.

2. Install the new stainless steel slippers and the pads.
3. Inspect the anti-rattle spring. Replace if worn or damaged.

   NOTE: The caliper pistons must be compressed with a C-clamp and a wooden block if you are installing new pads.

4. Rotate the disc brake caliper downward.
5. Install the caliper bolt.
   • Torque to 21-26 ft-lb (28-36 Nm).
6. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
7. Examine the operation of the brake system.
