Under "normal'' operating conditions, manual transaxle fluid is to be changed
at 30,000 mile (48,309 km) intervals. Proceed in the following manner:
- Park the vehicle on level ground and block the wheels.
- Unscrew and remove the speedometer cable/driven gear assembly from the
top of the transaxle.
- Place a large, flat container of sufficient capacity under the transaxle
drain plug. Remove the plug from underneath the car.
- After the oil has completely drained, install the drain plug and tighten
it.
- Add fluid meeting API specifications GL-4 or GL-5. See the Capacities
chart for the amount. Check the level by reinserting the speedometer driven
gear. The level is correct when the gear is entirely covered with lube oil,
but the level does not exceed the level of the ridge slightly above the
top of the gear. On 1988–89 turbocharged 626s and MX-6s, use the level
marks on the upper portion of the speedometer drive gear to determine the
proper oil level (please refer to the illustration).
- Add further fluid if necessary and reinstall the cable/gear unit into
the case.
- Remove the drain pan and unblock the wheels.
