DRAIN AND REFILL

Except RX-7 Turbo and 929

Under "normal'' operating conditions, manual transmission oil should be changed at 7,500 miles (12,077 km), then at 30,000 mile (48,309 km) intervals. Proceed in the following manner:

  1. Warm up the engine and park on a level surface. Shut off the engine, set the parking brake and block the wheels.
  2. Position a large, flat drain pan beneath the transmission. Using the proper size open end wrench, remove the drain (lower) plug from underneath the car. (Apply upward pressure on the drain plug until you can remove it.) Allow the fluid to completely drain into the pan.

    CAUTION
Be careful not to come in contact with any components of the exhaust system. Severe burns could result.

  3. Wipe the magnetic drain plug clean and reinstall it, using the proper size open end wrench.

    CAUTION
The EPA warns that prolonged contact with used engine oil may cause a number of skin disorders, including cancer! You should make every effort to minimize your exposure to used engine oil. Protective gloves should be worn when changing the oil. Wash your hands and any other exposed skin areas as soon as possible after exposure to used engine oil. Soap and water, or waterless hand cleaner should be used.

  4. Remove the filler plug using the proper size open end wrench.

NOTE: The gear oil must be pumped into the transmission. There are a number of inexpensive pumps (hand operated or drill driven) on the market to do this. Some gear oil containers have their own pumps. The best way to add transmission oil, if you do not have a regular pump, is to fill a bulb siphon (turkey baster) with oil, insert it into the filler plug hole and squeeze it until oil just starts to drip out of the filler hole.

  5. Fill the transmission with the recommended fluid (based on the expected temperature during operation) until the oil level reaches the bottom of the fill hole. (Please refer to the Capacities chart in this section.)
  6. Reinstall the filler plug with the proper size open end wrench.
  7. Remove the drain pan and unblock the wheels.
RX-7 Turbo and 929

Under "normal'' operating conditions, manual transmission oil should be changed at 60,000 mile (96,000 km) intervals, or every 60 months, whichever comes first. Proceed in the following manner:

  1. Warm up the engine and park on a level surface. Shut off the engine, set the parking brake and block the wheels.
  2. Position a large, flat drain pan beneath the transmission. Using the proper size open end wrench, remove the plugs labeled "A'', "B'' , "C'' and "D'' in the illustration. (Apply upward pressure on drain plugs "A'' and "B'' until you can remove them.) Allow the fluid to completely drain into the pan.

    CAUTION
Be careful not to come in contact with any components of the exhaust system. Severe burns could result.

  3. Wipe the magnetic drain plugs clean.

Protective gloves should be worn when changing the oil. Wash your hands and any other exposed skin areas as soon as possible after exposure to used engine oil. Soap and water, or waterless hand cleaner should be used.

  4. Coat the drain plug threads with sealant and install them with the proper size open end wrench. Tighten plug "A'' to 29–43 ft. lbs. (39–58 Nm) and plug "B'' to 18–29 ft. lbs. (24–39 Nm).
  5. Add the recommended lubricant (based on the temperature) through hole "C,'' until the oil level reaches the bottom of hole "D.'' Please refer to the Capacities chart in this section for approximate fluid requirements.

Some gear oil containers have their own pumps. The best way to add transmission oil, if you do not have a regular pump, is to fill a bulb siphon (turkey baster) with oil, insert it into the filler plug hole and squeeze it until oil just starts to drip out of check plug port.

  6. Coat the inspection plug threads with sealant and install them with the proper size open end wrench. Tighten plugs "C'' and "D'' to 18–29 ft. lbs. (24–39 Nm).
  7. Remove the drain pan and unblock the wheels.
