END-PLAY ADJUSTMENT

1983–89 626 and MX-6
  1. Raise and support the vehicle safely. Remove the rear wheel.
  2. If so equipped, disconnect and properly support the caliper assembly.
  3. Position a dial indicator gauge against the dust cap. Push and pull the disc brake rotor or brake drum in the axial direction and measure the end-play of the wheel bearing.
  4. End-play should be 0.008 in. (0.2mm). If necessary, correct by replacing the wheel bearing.
  5. Using a small cold chisel, stake the locknut tab so that 0.08 in. (2mm) or more protrudes from the end of the spindle groove.

NOTE: Do not use a pointed tool for staking.

  6. If applicable, install the caliper assembly.
  7. Install the wheel.
  8. If necessary, remove the other rear wheel and repeat Steps 2–7 for that side.
  9. Lower the vehicle.
