LEVEL CHECK

NOTE: Checking and replenishing the manual transaxle fluid is accomplished by removing the speedometer driven gear from the top of the transaxle case. Checking the transaxle oil is not required as routine maintenance (it is changed at 30,000 mile or 48,309 km intervals). However, if you suspect leakage, you might want to check fluid level as a precaution.

  1. Park the vehicle on level ground and block the wheels.
  2. Remove the speedometer cable from the gear assembly by unscrewing the knurled fitting.

  3. Unbolt and remove the speedometer driven gear. Pull the gear case upward to remove it from the housing, or use a flat-tipped screwdriver to pry it loose.
  4. The oil level should cover the gear and gear shoulder. On 1988–89 626s and MX-6s with turbocharged engines, use the level marks located on the upper portion of the speedometer driven gear (please refer to the illustration).
  5. Add gear oil, if necessary, through the speedometer gear mounting hole.
  6. Reinstall the speedometer driven gear. Reconnect the speedometer cable.
  7. Unblock the wheels.
