LEVEL CHECK

Manual Steering Except Rack and Pinion

Check the lubricant in the steering gear every 15,000 miles (24,155 km).

  1. Remove the filler plug.
  2. The oil level should be up to the bottom of the fill hole.
  3. Add SAE 90 EP gear lubricant, as required.
  4. Replace the filler plug.
1988–89 626 and MX-6 With Four Wheel Steering (4WS)

On 626 and MX-6 vehicles equipped with four wheel steering, check the rear steering gear fluid level every 30,000 miles (48,310 km).

  1. Remove the bleeder valve on the rear steering gear housing.

  2. Insert a small piece of wire into the bleeder valve opening and check the level. The fluid level (as indicated by the length of the double-arrow line in the accompanying illustration) should be 1.6–1.8 in. (41–46mm). The total capacity of the unit is 0.9–1.1 qt. (0.8–1.0 liter). Add fluid as required.
  3. Install the bleeder valve.
