NOTE: The ring gear can only be replaced separately on those
vehicles with a flywheel. On vehicles with a flexplate, the ring gear is integral.
- Remove the flywheel as previously described. Use a torch, confining the
flame carefully to the ring gear itself, to heat and expand the ring gear.
Then, support the flywheel at its center and tap the ring gear all around
to remove it.

- Put the new ring gear in an oven and heat it to 480°–570°F
(249°–299°C). Give the ring gear plenty of time to rise to
the oven temperature (at least 20 minutes).
CAUTION
Handle the ring gear with insulated gloves only!
- Position the ring gear with the beveled side facing the engine side of the
flywheel. Then, work it evenly onto the flywheel using a short piece of 2
x 4 lumber and a hammer. Install the flywheel as previously described.
