Water Pump

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. On carbureted engines, remove the air cleaner assembly and disconnect the wiring from the water temperature switch.
  3. On fuel injected engines, turn the eccentric shaft so that the top mark of the pulley is aligned with the indicator pin.
  4. Remove the air conditioner compressor, air pump, power steering, and alternator drive belts. Remove the alternator and the air pump.
  5. Remove the cooling fan and drive assembly.
  6. Remove the drive pulley for the air conditioner compressor, in front of the alternator/air pump drive pulleys. (It is the pulley on the eccentric shaft, not the one on the front of the compressor.)

  7. Place a pan under the lower radiator hose, then disconnect the hose (or remove the drain plug, if so equipped) and allow the coolant to drain from the system.
  8. Disconnect the upper radiator hose and coolant bypass hose.
  9. On fuel injected engines equipped with an automatic transmission, disconnect the water thermosensor connector and the water thermo switch connector.
  10. Unfasten the attaching bolts and remove the water pump, along with the cooling fan pulley. Retrieve the spacers or shims from the two studs where the gasket does not mount. Thoroughly clean old gasket material from the mating surfaces.

    To install:

  11. Position and install a new gasket with sealer.
  12. Install the water pump with spacers or shims, as required, and torque the attaching bolts in the indicated sequence to 13–20 ft. lbs. (18–27 Nm).
  13. On fuel injected engines equipped with an automatic transmission, attach the water thermosensor and water thermo switch connectors.
  14. Connect the coolant bypass and upper radiator hoses to the water pump.
  15. Connect the lower radiator hose at the radiator (or close the drain plug).
  16. Install the air conditioner compressor drive pulley.
  17. Install the cooling fan and drive assembly. Check the clearance between the tip of the cooling fan blades and the cowling. Adjust the cowling until there is 0.63–0.94 in. (16-24mm) clearance.
  18. Install the alternator and air pump.
  19. Install and properly tension all drive belts.
  20. On carbureted engines, install the air cleaner assembly and connect the water temperature switch wiring.
  21. Connect the negative battery cable. Fill the cooling system to the proper level with a suitable coolant mixture.
  22. Start the engine and check for coolant leaks.
