WARNING
Never operate the radio with the speaker disconnected or with the speaker leads
shorted together, since damage to the output transistors could result. When
replacing the speaker, be sure to use one with the same impedance (ohms).
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Remove the crash pad, meter hood, and wood grain center panel, as outlined
in the instrument cluster removal procedure, later in this section.
- Remove the attaching screws from either side of the dash panel. Detach the
antenna wiring, power connector, and speaker connector, then pull the radio
out of the dash.
- Install in the reverse order.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable. Pull off the switch knobs.
- Remove the mounting bolts and slide the radio out of the dashboard.
- Disconnect the antenna feeder and wiring connector, then remove the radio.
- Install in the reverse order.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Remove the ashtray, radio knobs, heater control lever knob, and the fan
control switch knob.
- Remove the center panel attaching screws and pull the center panel rearward.
- Remove the radio attaching screws and disconnect the antenna.
- Installation is the reverse of removal.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Remove the ashtray. On vehicles equipped with a compact disc player, gently
pry the ornamental plate from the center panel with a protected tool. On conventional
sound systems, withdraw the box from the center panel. Unfasten the lower
center panel attaching screws and remove the panel by releasing the upper
retaining clips.
- Remove the audio unit bracket retaining screws and carefully slide the unit
out from the dash until the electrical connections are visible and accessible.
- Detach all the electrical connections and antenna leads from the rear of
the unit and pull it out of the dash.
To install:
- Rest the audio unit on the dash and fasten all the electrical connections.
Slide the unit into the dash until the mounting holes align with the bracket
holes. Install and tighten the bracket retaining screws.
- Position the lower center panel and engage the retaining clips. Install
and tighten the retaining screws.
- On conventional sound systems, push the box into the center panel. On compact
disc equipped systems, gently push the ornamental plate into the center panel.
- Install the ashtray and connect the negative battery cable.
- Pull the ashtray out, depress the tang in back, and remove it from its slot
in the dash.
- On models with 4WD, remove the side panels from the shift console to gain
access to the radio brackets and retaining screws.
- On non-4WD models, remove the two fastening screws from the area of the
panel fascia behind the ashtray, and remove the panel, disconnecting the cigarette
lighter when you can reach in and unplug it.
- Remove the two screws from atop of the two mounting brackets and slide the
radio out. Detach the antenna's wiring lead and the electrical connector plug,
then remove the radio.
To install:
- Installation is the reverse of removal. If the unit is being replaced, transfer
the mounting brackets to the new radio.
NOTE: On vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission,
apply the parking brake and move the lever to the "L'' position to gain sufficient
removal and installation clearance. Protect the console and trim surfaces with
soft cloth and do not attempt to pry the trim from the face of the audio system.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Remove the three plastic Phillips head screws from the duct panel under
cover located on the passenger's side. Locate and remove the single large
plastic hex nut that holds the duct panel under cover in place.
- Reach in behind the audio unit and remove the two attaching nuts. Push on
the mounting studs and pull the unit from the dash until the electrical connections
are visible and accessible. Detach the electrical connections and antenna
leads from the rear of the unit, then pull the radio from the dash.
To install:
- Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure. Make sure that the
duct panel under cover on the passenger's side is aligned properly with the
ductwork under the dash.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Remove the center panel as described previously in this section.
- Disconnect the radio wiring and the antenna cable.
- Unfasten the attaching screws and remove the radio.
To install:
- Position the radio in the console opening and install the attaching screws.
- Connect the radio and antenna wiring.
- Install the center panel.
- Connect the negative battery cable.
NOTE: If a new antenna was installed with the radio, use
the following adjustment procedure to obtain optimum radio and antenna reception
sensitivity. If the antenna is a telescoping type, extend it fully. Turn
the ignition switch to the ACC position. Turn on the radio and set it to
the AM range. Select a weak station in the 1,400 khz range. If no station
exists in that range, use static to make the adjustment. Turn the antenna
trim adjustment screw to the left and right to find the maximum sensitivity.
If the sensitivity does not change, there is either a problem with the antenna,
a broken wire, or the signal is too strong.
