Speedometer cable removal and installation requires reaching behind the instrument
cluster and disconnecting the cable from the rear of the speedometer. On some
vehicles, the cluster must be removed to gain access to the speedometer.
NOTE: If the cable housing is intact, the cable core may be
removed separately.
- Reach behind the instrument cluster and disconnect the speedometer cable
by depressing the flat portion of the connector, while pulling the connector
off.
- Pull the cable core out of the cable housing. (If the entire cable core
does not come out due to breakage, it will be necessary to unscrew the speedometer
cable housing at the transmission/transaxle, and pull the lower end of the
cable out.)
- If necessary, disconnect the cable housing from the transmission/transaxle.
Some cables are protected by a dust boot where the cable connects to the transmission/transaxle.
Raise the vehicle and support it safely, as required. If there is a dust boot
installed, pull it up a couple of inches to uncover the cable connector. If
the dust boot is worn, replace it.
To install:
- If applicable, reconnect the lower end of the cable housing to the transmission/transaxle.
Make sure the cable connector on the transmission/transaxle is tightened properly.
- If installing a new cable core, lubricate it with speedometer cable lubricant
(powdered graphite), and insert it into the instrument cluster end of the
cable housing.
NOTE: Take care not to force any radical bends, as these
will cause the cable core to bind and wear out quickly.
- Work the cable core through the housing until it bottoms against the drive
gear in the transmission/transaxle. Then, simultaneously push the core inward
while rotating it until the square end of the core engages and seats against
the driven gear.
- Reconnect the cable housing to the back of the speedometer. When attaching
the cable to the instrument cluster, make sure the square end of the core
fits into the drive yoke in the cable connection.
